Chapter 39

James

I closed the laptop and got up from the desk in my father’s study. There was still nothing from the investigator. All my searches had turned up nothing as well. The brothers seemed to be lost for good.

I didn’t know who they were or where they were. They obviously had different last names. We couldn’t find anything. It was like they vanished. Part of me was wondering if they really existed. I didn’t think my mom was senile, but maybe my dad gave her a line of bullshit.

It was stupid bullshit, but sometimes Dad had a strange sense of humor. A dark sense of humor. The way he liked to teach life lessons was a little screwed up. Grayson could attest to that. I didn’t think Dad would lie about having kids, but one never knew.

“Hey,” Rory said and popped her head into the study. “I just made lunch. Your mom is on the patio. Maybe you want to eat with her?”

“You know what I’d like to do?” I teased. I got up from the desk and walked over to grab her. I pulled her into my arms for a kiss.

“I’m sure I do, but if we were to have sex right now, you would literally be paying me for sex. I would be your prostitute.”

I waggled my eyebrows. “Can I pick your outfit? And you have to call me daddy?”

She rolled her eyes. “You are so bad. Go. I need to get her meds sorted for the week and finish changing her bed.”

I gave her another kiss. “All right, I’m going to go find Mom.”

“Good boy,” she said and swatted my ass when I walked by.

“Oh, I like that,” I said as she walked away.

I found Mom out on the patio. There was a tray of finger sandwiches and a pitcher of iced tea in front of her. I smiled and took a seat. “There you are,” she said. “I thought you were going to work all day.”

“Rory said you had your world-famous finger sandwiches,” I said and grabbed one from the tray.

“She made them.”

“You told her how to make them,” I said.

She shrugged. “I suppose that’s true.”

I poured myself a glass of tea and grabbed a plate. I wasn’t an animal and she let me get away with the first sandwich, but she wouldn’t let me get away with it a second time. “Did you guys do your exercises?” I asked her.

“We did. She wants me to sign up for yoga. She says it will help with my balance and keep me limber.”

I nodded. “That sounds like good advice. Are you going to do it?”

“I don’t know, maybe,” she answered without enthusiasm.

“Mom, it would be good for you to get out of the house. I’m sure they have senior classes.”

“Are you calling me old, son?”

I popped a sandwich in my mouth. “Remember when you used to make these for us? When Mason said he wanted finger sandwiches, I thought he meant actual fingers. I cried. They all made fun of me for years.
